# Certificate of insurance (COI)

**A certificate of insurance is a one-page summary from your insurance agent showing your policies, limits and dates. GCs usually ask for one, often naming them as additional insured, before you start work.**

## Why it matters on a drywall job

- An expired or missing COI can hold up your start or your payment.
- Tracking renewal dates and sending updated COIs ahead of time avoids that.
