Joint tape (paper or mesh)
By James Grokman, CEO, TapeAndFloat · Updated 2026-10-28
Joint tape reinforces the seams between sheets. Paper tape is set in a bed of mud; self-adhesive fiberglass mesh sticks on and is usually covered with setting compound.
Why it matters on a drywall job
- Tape choice affects which mud you use and how corners hold up.
- Tape is a material line in the takeoff, figured from linear feet of joints.
