Lien timeline basics

Lien timeline basics means knowing that state law usually sets time limits for sending required notices and filing a lien. Each state sets its own rules for how that time is counted, and missing a step can put lien rights at risk.
Not legal advice. This is a general explanation for contractors across the U.S. Lien and payment rules differ by state and by contract, and they change. Before you act on a lien, waiver or payment clause, talk to a construction attorney in your state.
Why it matters on a drywall job
- On a slow-paying job, a notice window can pass while you are still waiting on the GC.
- Tracking each job's notice and lien steps from your first day of work usually helps keep the option open.
For one state's rules, see the Texas lien guide for subcontractors. It covers Texas only.
