Mud (joint compound)
By James Grokman, CEO, TapeAndFloat · Updated 2026-10-28
Mud is the trade name for joint compound, the paste used to embed tape and cover joints, corners and screw heads. It comes ready-mixed (dries in air) or as a powder setting compound (hardens by chemical reaction).
Why it matters on a drywall job
- Mud is a material line in your estimate. The amount you need goes up with the finish level.
- The type of mud affects drying time between coats, which affects your schedule.
