Tape and float
By James Grokman, CEO, TapeAndFloat · Updated 2026-10-28
Tape and float is the Texas and Southern name for drywall finishing: embedding tape over the joints, then "floating" coats of mud to hide the seams and fasteners. Other regions call it taping and finishing.
Why it matters on a drywall job
- Many crews bid hanging and tape-and-float as separate line items, so it helps to know which one a GC means.
- Tape-and-float labor depends on the finish level and the texture, which is why both belong in the scope.
