Drywall texture (orange peel, knockdown)
By James Grokman, CEO, TapeAndFloat · Updated 2026-10-28
Texture is a pattern sprayed, rolled or troweled onto finished drywall. Orange peel is a fine spray pattern; knockdown is sprayed, then flattened with a knife.
Why it matters on a drywall job
- Texture changes what finish level the walls need underneath it.
- Matching existing texture on repairs is its own line item and a common change-order item.
